Menzies Institute for Medical Research
Menzies Institute for Medical Research
A suite of 'cardiophonic' furniture designed to promote conversations between and about hearts.
Commissioned via an artist call-out by the Menzies Institute for Medical Research and Detached Cultural Organisation, Tasmania, Australia.
A custom-designed suite of 4 lounge chairs (and two coffee tables) with heart sensors and mini-computers hidden in the framework of the seat. Concealed speakers in the wings of each chair play back the heartbeat of its occupant, along with a relaxing ambient soundtrack.
Situated in the Menzies ground floor foyer, the live installation is experienced by students and hundreds of visitors to the centre on a daily basis.
Artists and designers: David Patman, Michelle Boyde, Matt Warren and Richie Cyngler. Created in collaboration with Tasmanian furniture designer, Guy Paramore.
With thanks to our all-Tasmanian production team and suppliers including Colorcote, Warwick Fabrics, Total Surface Protection, Iron Lion Design, and Phillip Hyland Upholstery.
